Abstract
Medusae of the hydrozoan Sarsia gemmifera were observed in large numbers in the marina of Wemeldinge (Eastern Scheldt, The Netherlands} on 10/08/2002. Over three weeks later the medusa (ca. 20 specimens} was still found in the nearby marina of Yerseke. Older Belgian data demonstrate that the species can often be abundant, Dutch data on findings are scarce. It is hypothesized that the occurrence of this medusa in the North Sea may be invasion-like due to low water temperatures in winter. Furthermore, in favourable years, the asexual production of new medusae during the medusa phase, could be an effective strategy for rapid and wide dispersal of the species in boreal regions.
