Met behulp van ERASES, een model voor het uitvoeren van een ecotoxicologische risico analyse voor de Westerschelde is onderscheid gemaakt tussen de effecten op sterfte en de effecten op reproduktie. De spreiding van NO effect concentration (NOEC) is echter groot, en soms ligt de gemiddelde NOEC voor reproduktie hoger dan de NOEC voor de sterfte. Om de effecten zo goed mogelijk in kaart te kunnen brengen ligt het voor de hand om één parameter te kiezen, namelijk effect, in plaats van twee, namelijk sterfte en reproduktie.
