Abstract |
In the context of the design of the new sea lock in Zeebrugge, the Maritime Access Division has asked Flanders Hydraulics (FH) to determine the difference in density between the outer and inner harbours. This difference in density is important for the hydraulic design of the levelling system. A difference in density creates additional force on the ship in the whirlpool during levelling. A difference in density also results in less mixing and therefore a slower dissipation of the outflowing water in the outer and inner harbours. In studies conducted in the past, it was assumed that the difference in density is negligible because the level of the inner harbour is maintained by means of seawater. On its own initiative, FH launched project 17_004 to analyse the available density measurements. The results of this analysis were discussed with the Maritime Access Division. Based on the results, the Maritime Access Division asked FH to set up a continuous measurement campaign (minimum 6 months) to measure the density at 4 locations. From an initial analysis of this assignment by Hans Vereecken and Paul Vanderkimpen, it was decided to outsource the carrying out of the measurements and the delivery of a factual data report. FH will draw up specifications for carrying out the measurements and delivering a factual data report. FH will carry out a revision of the interim measurement results. After receiving the factual data report, FH will draw up a report discussing the results and providing conclusions and recommendations. |
