Development of a Decision Support System for water quality management of the Scheldt estuary and the coastal zone
Thesaurus terms Modelling; Pollution; Water quality
A decision support system will be developped in this project for the management of the saline part of the Scheldt estuary and the coastal zone. Important pollutant sources in the catchment will be analysed in relation to social and economical activities. The life cycles of the pollutants in water and sediment will be predicted. In such a way, the water quality can be simulated in relation to the pollution sources. Therefore, the DSS can be used to demonstrate the efficiencies of coastal measuresthat envisage the reduction of inputs. Such efficiency evaluations are essential for the decision makers to make a good judgement of the management policies. The DSS will be developped for the authorities in Belgium and the Netherlands. The DSS can be an important tool for the global management of the Scheldt and the coastal zone. Also this will contribute to the cooperation between the countries and as such optimize the sustainable development of the area.
