Abstract
The project aims to advance physical aspects of marine environmental modelling through:

  1. forming common North Sea and Mediterranean data sets with which existing 2-D shelf-sea hydrodynamic models will be forced, intercompared and tested;
  2. measuring characteristic physical and phytoplankton variability in the Rhine outflow plume region in September/October 1990, including HF radar mapping of surface currents, time-series moorings for currents, temperature, salinity, fluorescence and transmittance, and detailed ship surveys;
  3. forming a framework and primitive modules for a new common model of physical and plankton behaviour in regions of freshwater influence, incorporating surface fluxes, shear, stratification, turbulence, waves, suspended sediment (a module will be developed) and plankton dynamics.
