Abstract
The monograph reviews various factors to be taken into consideration in design and application of high pressure aquarium systems to the study of the biology of deep sea fauna. The topics covered include biological and oceanographic problems requiring high pressure aquaria; observations on deep sea fauna, in situ experiments, methods of retrieving deep ocean fauna, and choice of potential biological materials for study in high pressure aquaria; chemical aspects--sensors, properties of solutions, and of macromolecules; high pressure aquaria--general design characteristics; and, design and performance characteristics of currently existing high pressure aquarium systems. The monograph consists of formal contributions by 50 authors representing research efforts in six nations, supplemented by transcripts of discussions critically reviewing or extending the information provided in the formal communications.
