Abstract
The Antarctic climate system varies on time scales from orbital, to millennial to sub-annualand is closely coupled to other parts of the global climate system. The Antarctic ClimateChange and the Environment review discusses these variations from the perspective of thegeological record and the recent historical period from which we have instrumental data(the last 50 years), discusses their consequences for the biosphere, and shows how thelatest numerical models project changes into the future, taking into account humaninterference in the form of the release of greenhouse gases and chlorofluorcarbons into theatmosphere. This report highlights the profound impact that the ozone hole has had on theAntarctic environment over the last 30 years, shielding the continent from much of theeffect of global warming. However, this situation will not last. Over the next century weexpect ozone concentrations above the Antarctic to recover, but if greenhouse gasconcentrations increase at the present rate then temperatures across the continent willincrease by several degrees and there will be about one third less sea ice.
