Abstract
In the Burdinale Valley and the Mehaigne Valley (Massif of Brabant, Belgium) a lithostratigraphic column of 2100m thickness is constructed with 700m sediments descripted in detail. Seven informal formations and 22 members are defined. The sediments are of flysch-type, deposited in a miogeosynclinal trough. Graptolites were collected in 27 horizons in a 400 m sequence and were determinated by Dr. B. RICKARDS (Cambridge, U.K.). They range from Lower to Middle Wenlock. More than 5200 Chitinozoans were studies in 73 samples. They are moderately well preserved. The assemblages can be grouped in 15 Chitinozoa "zones". Comparison with Gotland, Wales e.a. allows a datation of these zones from the middle of the Llandovery to the top of the Lower Ludlow. One however, has a Upper-Orodovician age. The graptolite zonation confirms the Chitinozoa zonation. Some paleoecological and paleogeographical interpretations are proposed. A general tectonic description of the studied area is given and a geological map (scale 1:25.000) sums up the distribution of the lithostratigraphic units.
