Abstract |
The timescales of geophysical fluid flows are classified according to their relations with the associated processes. There are timescales which are influenced by the flow without influencing it, influenced by the flow and influencing it, not influenced by the flow and influencing it. Examples of characteristic times belonging to each class are given and the related phenomena are discussed. So, are successively examined the inertial oscillations, the deepening of the oceanic mixed layer, the mixing in the Mururoa lagoon, and the hydrodynamics of Prince William Sound, Alaska. Particular attention is devoted to the concept of age and residence time, allowing one to build very simple compartmental models which may help to interpret the results of much more complex models. |
