Abstract |
T. mirabilis Monod is known from 3 thermal springs at EL Hamma, Tunisia. One, EL Baama, was destroyed during or shortly after World War II. The 2nd one, Ain Sidi abd el Khadr, was subject to reconstruction June 1976. The 3rd and most important one, Ain el Bordj, which is the type locality, has been used for recreational and curative bathing since antiquity. Modern times have brought the usage of disinfectants (chlorine) and ionic detergents, and the ensuing pollution has decimated Thermosbaena and its accompanying flora and fauna to such a degree that the survival of the species has become uncertain. It is proposed that a small additional basin be built for a Thermosbaena reserve. It should be so designed as to produce optimal ecological conditions for the animal, and be free of human interference. |
