Abstract |
This thesis research is part of a bigger topic, at the Flanders Hydraulics Research laboratory in Antwerp, named "Influence of breaking logs on flow patterns for lock filling with gate openings".There are several techniques that can be used to level a lock. The system this report will focus on is one where the lock is filled or emptied by openings in the lock gates. With this system all the water enters in a concentrated jets that will spread out inside the lock. Other systems, for instance, use multiple openings at the sides or bottom of the lock so the force of these jets may be limited and higher flow rates may be reached. These systems are mostly used with high differences in head. The scope of this thesis is to analyse the influence of breaking logs on the spreading of the jet, the flow rate and the impulse of the jet. Therefore velocity measurements are performed on a scale model of a lock with one opening in the lock gate. From these velocity measurements the spreading of the jet in the lock chamber is visualised and the flow rate and impulse of the jet is calculated. This will be done for different configurations, e.g. with and without breaking logs in front of the opening. A comparison will be made to see effect of the breaking log configuration on the jet spreading and on the flow rate and impulse of the jet.The results of these tests reveal that the breaking logs have an impact on the jet and dominate the shape of the jet. Yet there still are some points that need further investigation. |
