Abstract
In this paper, we present a comparison of calculated and measured vertical motions of the Duisburg Test Case (DTC) container ship, in calm water or head waves, at rest or with forward speed. At forward speed in calm water, running sinkage and trim (squat) have been compared with the potential-flow methods implemented in SlenderFlow and RAPID software. In head seas, bow and stern vertical motions have been compared with strip theory (OCTOPUS, PDStrip, SEAWAY) and panel method wave-induced motion codes (DIFFRAC, FATIMA, HydroSTAR, MOSES, NEMOH, WAMIT). The results in this paper are intended to form a useful set of benchmarking data for assessing the suitability of each code in different conditions, for container ships in shallow water.
