Abstract
Over the last decades, Indonesian mangrove forests have been exposed to both natural and anthropogenic pressures that induced a loss of 40% of its extend, which represents the fastest rate of mangrove destruction in the world. Mangrove trees provide a wide range of ecosystem services such as carbon storage in sediments, nursery habitat and coastal defense. Due to their sediment-trapping ability, mangrove forests provide a range of favorable conditions for chenier formation. To compare the mangrove forest and the cheniers evolutions, drone flights have been conducted in Demak, Indonesia before and after rainy season from July 2017 until May 2019. A significant correlation exists between mangrove and chenier dynamics as the chenier presence does not increase the mangrove growth, but it stabilizes the mangrove population by protecting from erosion. Cheniers can be extremely dynamic and their development very unpredictable. The parameters allowing their development such as the seasonal influence are not well known yet. In Demak, Indonesia, the monsoon influence on chenier growth has been showed to be not significant. Moreover, Indonesia is exposed to an important subsidence, that coupled with the sea level rise, can be very dangerous for both local ecosystems and population. A relationship between mangrove or chenier erosion and subsidence exists in Demak, but more data are required to determine the tendency of this relationship and consequently the exact effect of subsidence on mangrove and chenier erosion.
