Abstract
In recent years the European policies, including the maritime transport policy, have been influenced by new tendencies, whereof the integration of environmental considerations and sustainable development is the most important one. Nowadays this process emphasises the special needs of the enlargement of the European Union. In the first part of this contribution, the accent will be put on the reorientation of the European policies towards sustainable development. This evolution mainly took place during the last five years. Attention will be paid to the concept of sustainable development and the integration of it into the European treaties and policy documents. As sustainable development can be seen as a balance-seeking between economic, environmental and social aspects, some words must be said about the integration of the social aspects through the concept of corporate social responsability. In the second part of the contribution the accent will be put on the operationalisation of sustainable development in the European maritime transport policy.
