Abstract
Mytilicola intestinalis is a parasitic copepod living in the gut of mussels. The species originates from the Mediterranean Sea and unintentionally arrived in our regions along with the transport of mussels. The species was first observed in Belgium in 1950 in mussels transported from the Netherlands to the Sluice Dock of Ostend. Not much later, the parasite was found along the entire Belgian east coast. It is unclear whether the species is still present in Belgium, although it is suspected that the absence of reports is more likely due to a lack of attention.
