Abstract |
The marine diatom Coscinodiscus wailesii is native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It is thought to have arrived in Europe by transport with young Japanese oysters. Alternatively, it might have been transported with the ballast water of cargo ships. This diatom belongs to the phytoplankton, which implies that these organisms spread locally with the prevailing sea currents. The species was likely introduced to Belgium around 1979 and is now a common planktonic alga in our coastal waters, present year-round. |
