Abstract
The Stone moroko Pseudorasbora parva is a freshwater fish that is also occasionally found in brackish water environments, such as the Scheldt estuary and the Lower Scheldt. Originally native to East Asia, this species was introduced to Belgium as a stowaway with fish transports from Eastern Europe, primarily for recreational fishing. The first observation in Belgium dates back to 1992 (freshwater rivers), with the initial detection in the study area occurring in the Lower Scheldt Basin in 1998. The Stone moroko is an opportunist that easily adapts to changing environmental conditions and can reach high local densities. It is one of the most successful invasive exotic freshwater fish and has been on the EU list of invasive species since August 2016.
