Abstract
Composition and distribution of amphipod populations from the Mira Estuary (south-west Portugal) are given, based on samples obtained during 1984-85. Thirty five species have been identified. The Mira Estuary shows clear marine affinity as far as 7.5 km from the sea, which is demonstrated by the high number of marine amphipod species. A clear brackish-water influence is responsible for the decrease in the species number in the sector localized between 7.5 and 27.5 km from the sea, which is the limit of the studied area. Data on the species distribution in relation to the different kinds of substracts are also provided: 3 species have been found exclusively on rocky substrates, 2 species exclusively on sandy bottoms; of the 25 species found in Zostera meadows, 16 were exclusive.
