Abstract
Soil samples from a nature reserve for indigenous animals in Uruguay yielded one new and two known Xiphodorus species and one new Paraxiphidorus species. The new Xiphidorus is described as X. uruguayensis n. sp. It can be distinguished from other Xiphidorus species by its large body size, cylindrical anterior end offset from the remainder of the body by a sudden expansion of the latter and by its barrel- to heart-shaped amphid with small slit-like aperture. The other species found were X. balcarceanus Chaves & Coomans, 1984 and X. minor Rashid, Coomans & Sharma, 1986. The new Paraxiphidorus species, P. heysni n. sp., is larger and more stout than the other species of the genus P. michelluchi Coomans & Chaves, 1995 and has a relatively shorter tail, longer odontostyle, longer spicules and more supplements. The female is described for the first time in the genus and the genus diagnosis is emended accordingly.
