Abstract:
The research group covers four different areas : 1. Functional morphology of the extremities and analysis of basic functional patterns in manipulation and locomotion. Starting from comparative anatomy, hypothetical models are used to understand the flexor-extensor mechanism in particular. Such models are tested in the living by means of motion analysis. 2. Ultrastructure of afferent nerve endings is studied, to elucidate their receptor functions in different organ systems of the human body. The periodontium and its innervation, and the joints of the articular processes in the vertebral column, are analyzed by histological techniques. 3. The spinal cord and the embryology of the nervous system and of the craniofacial region, are studied by Micro-MRI techniques. Normal neuro-anatomical structures are compared to those in pathological conditions, as in Multiple Sclerosis and in Chiari Malformation combined with spina bifida. 4. Teratogenic effects and teratology, with emphasis on the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. Classification of brain tumours.
