Abstract
Through the ever increasing demand for fish in combination with systematic overfishing and illegal fisheries, fish stocks are declining worldwide. Nowadays, the deficiencies in wild catch are largely replaced by aquaculture production. However, the aquaculture sector has some major issues with sustainability.
In this project we will develop a forensic tool which can serve as proof for illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) products, identify mislabeling and trace escapees from aquaculture. Wewill focus on European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) because of its high commercial value and importance for aquaculture in Europe.
Thepractical tool will comprise a diagnostic and validated kit of informative SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) markers. The kit will allow us to appoint individual fish to their area of origin (wild vs. aquacultureand fine scale geographical location) in a fast, cheap and reliable manner.
