Abstract
A method has been developed to determine amorphous suspended silica in seawater using the following principle. Reactive silicate concentration is determined by the method of Strickland and Parsons (1968). Then diluted hydrogen fluoride is added to a final concentration of 0,49% (W/W) at T=0. Very rapidly at T=1, 2, 3 minutes and at T= 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 hours subsamples are taken and the reactive silicate concentrations are determined by a somewhat different Strickland and Parsons method. The molybdate reagent contains boric acid in order to complex excess fluoride and to decompose silico-fluoride complexes. The obtained values of the concentrations are plotted against time and from this curve three silica containing fractions which react with fluoride at a different rate are determined.
