Abstract |
Plants of Aster tripolium L. from tidal and non-tidal salt-marsh areas show differences in their life cycle and appearance. The two types do not occur in each other's habitats. Apart from the morphological differences already known, the two types differ in their response to salinity and inundation. These differences, however, do not explain why the two types do not occur in each other's habitat, as field experiments proved they could. From the results of the present study and the fact that the populations of the two types are physically separated, the possibility of genetic isolation and absence in each other's habitat is discussed. |
