Abstract
This major atlas presents a comprehensive assessment of seabirds in north-west European waters and comes from a collaboration between several countries. Data were collected from 1979 to 1994 and have been used to describe the seasonal distribution and abundance of over 50 species of seabird, including: gulls; terns; sea ducks; skuas and divers. These are supplemented with detailed summaries of the methods used for the collection, processing and interpretation of the data. The atlas has been published using data from the European Seabirds at Sea database with contributions from the following organisations: Joint Nature Conservation Committee (United Kingdom); Nederlands Instituut voor Onderzoek der Zee (the Netherlands); Ornis Consult (Denmark); National Institute for Coastal and Marine Management/RIKZ (the Netherlands); Nederlands Zeevogelgroep (the Netherlands); Instituut voor Bos- en Natuuronderzoek (the Netherlands); Instituut voor Natuur Behoud (Belgium); National Environmental Research Institute (Denmark); Norsk Institutt for Naturforskning (Norway); Vogelwarte Helgoland (Germany).
