Abstract
UNESCO IOC IODE'S OceanTeacher is a system on the World Wide Web (www.oceanteacher.org) that supports learning in the area of data and information management for marine science and oceanography. Early 2009, OceanTeacher was being transferred to a Semantic Media Wiki Platform. The scope of this study is to prepare the expansion of OceanTeacher in the area of marine biodiversity data management.Resources were collected as a basis for structuring the marine biodiversity data management part of the OceanTeacher. Such resources included: library classification systems, training manuals, biodiversity database producers and conference's proceedings. A structure of the Marine Biodiversity Data Management structure was created and proposed to the editors system.Marine biodiversity data management training material, available from previous IODE courses and stored in CD media, was recalled and evaluated according to each item's suitablility for future use during IODE training courses and utilisation in OceanTeacher's Digital Library.During the training material assessment, a number of files that were evaluated as suitable for future use, both in training courses and the platform' Digital Library, were uploaded on Marine Biodiversity Data Management pages that were created for this purpose. The rest of the materials were archived on a remote server of IODE, being available for future use.A collection and update of a list of online marine biodiversity databases was made. It is planned to be available on the WWW through OceanTeacher.Suitability and usability studies of the new platform for the OceanTeacher Digital Library have been carried out. The re-designed and re-engineered system is evaluated as powerful and well usable, with a few issues that need to be resolved. The outcome of this master's thesis work is a sound basis for setting the structure of course on data management of marine biological diversity. Now, further actions need to be taken by experts to create the desired high-quality, effective online-education system
