Abstract
The frequency of maintenance dredging work is determined by the inflow of new sediments, erosion and consolidation processes of the sediment. A test program was set up at Flanders Hydraulic Research Institute to evaluate the behavior and consolidation processes of loose sediment layers over time. Within a controlled laboratory setting the external influences on consolidation processes can be limited. With improved knowledge of the time constants of the essential physico-chemical processes related to consolidation, one could improve the prediction of future maintenance dredging works necessary for a safe navigation.
