Abstract
Sediments of 64 stations where Oliva species have been collected in Hansa Bay (Papua New Guinea) have been analysed for carbonates, organic carbon and granulometry. Comparison between the classification of sediments and the distribution of 30 species shows that the latter fall into stenotopic and eurytopic species. Crypsis is generalised in both groups of species. The taxonomic consequences of crypsis are discussed.
