Abstract |
Most numerical groundwater-flow models assume the groundwater to be fresh. We developed the Density Package and MT3DENSE for the three-dimensional MODFLOW code to simulate the effect of density differences in the groundwater system. Density effects are accounted for by density-source terms, which are added to the standard MODFLOW equations. In the Density Package the density distribution is assumed to be constant in time, in MT3DENSE the density-driven flow changes in time due to displacement of chloride. The calculated heads are fresh-water heads. The Density Package and MT3DENSE are compatible with standard MODFLOW pre- and post-processing, flow path and transport codes to calculate and visualize flow paths and transport in variable density situations. |
