Abstract
This article illustrates the important relationship between the Flemish water policy and the initiatives of international organisations on the same matter. Emphasize has been put on the new responsabilities of the 3 Regions in Belgium and the subsequent new need of coordination between the regional and the federal authorities. Furthermore the important international activities related to water policy are listed in an increasing regional scale, starting with the neighbouring countries involved in the Treaties on the Protection of the rivers Scheldt and Meuse, the European water policy, the Convention on the Protection of the North Sea (Convention of Paris), the Convention on the Protection of Transboundary Rivers and Inter-national Lakes (Convention of Helsinki), the Agenda 21 Chapter on Water Policy resulting from the Rio Declaration on sustainable development.
