Polysiphonia banyulensis nov. sp. (section Oligosiphonia) is a species with four pericentral cells, without any cortication. The isolated erect thalii have pseudodichotomous ramifications that are markedly narrower at their base: they originate in the axils of trichoblasts. These are very large and are characterized by the very large sub-basal cell. The phyllotaxis of the trichoblasts is 1/4 but the number of segments that occur between two trichoblasts is variable. The tetraspores occur isolated or in two contiguous segments in the upper half of the thallus. The male and female gametophytes are still unknown. Collected at Banyuls-sur-Mer, Pyrénées-Orientales, France in July 1974.
