Abstract
The optimum line spacing for bathymetric surveys in sandwave areas is recommended to be less than 50 metres. The principles of current swath sounding systems are reviewed in the context of the SIMRAD EM 950 system which was deployed in conjuction with the EM 1000 for surveys to investigate sediment transport and bedform mobility on the Middelkerke Bank off the Belgian coast in the North Sea. Records from the results of surveys in 1994 and 1995 demonstrate mobility in the area and some conclusions drawn to explain the phenomena.
