Abstract
During the period May 1972–April 1977 the daily average levels of Pb, Zn, Cd, Ba, V, Ni, Mn, Cu, Cr and Fe were routinely determined in Ostend at the Belgian North Sea coast. An analysis of these data as a function of the wind direction clearly shows the diferences between air masses from over land and over sea. Easterly to south-easterly airflows give the highest levels for all heavy metals, while north-westerly to northerly winds bring the cleanest air to the Belgian coast.
