Abstract
This document presents the application of a software tool for modelling dike breaches and the consequences it may have on the protected land. Sobek-Rural, developed by WL|DELFT HYDRAULICS, is an integrated numerical hydraulic modelling package to simulate hydrodynamics of one-dimensional river/channel network and two-dimensional overland flow.

The area of the mine sagging, on the Belgian border, of the river Meuse is protected by a system of dikes and pumps. This system must guard the area from flooding and seeping groundwater. As a result of the mining activities in the past the surface sagged up to 7 m. The breaching of a dike during a storm will mainly cause disastrous consequences for the communities of Leut and Meeswijk. The goal of this document is to simulate some scenarios to determine the possible consequences of a dike breach on a certain location, thus one has an estimation of the time left to evacuate the area and a notion of possible evacuation roads.
