Abstract
    TNO Den Helder knows a very long tradition in the execution of different, ecotoxicologic mesocosm-experiments. In diverse experiments eutrofying phenomena have been observed, that are closely related with a inhibition of the development of zooplankton, influenced by toxicants. This report gives an overview of the mesocosm experiments, executed by TNO and gives a number of examples of the creation of eutrofying phenomena in relation to effects of toxicants on zooplankton. With examples it is made credible that the concentration of certain toxicants has been, and probably still is, a noxious influence on the functioning of calanoid copepods. This results in a less efficient control of the algae density by the zooplankton. This risk of eutrofying phenomena seems to increase both thanks to the supply of nutrients and thanks to the toxication-load from the sea. Therefore, we can conclude that in a clean sea the pelagic ecosystem would have a less hard job processing the nutrients. For an integrated water management, it is necessary to take this close relation into account as far as micro pollution and eutrofying is concerned. The examples from this report indicate once again that in mesocosm research crucial factors and processes, that determine the response of the ecosystem on the environmental disturbance, will show, without their importance being detected at forehand. Results of mesocosm experiments, however, may not be translated to the open sea situations without further ado.
