Abstract
A decrease is observed in the trace metal concentration of bottom sediments in the seaward direction in the estuaries of the rivers Rhine and Ems. Naural tracers, primarily stable isotopes, used for distinguishing between marine and fluvial sediments show that this decrease is caused by the mixing of marine (low metal concentrations) and fluvial (high metal concentrations) sediments. Evidence is found for a limited occurrence of precipitation-adsorption processes.
