Abstract |
An implicit numerical model was succesfully used to simulate water circulation in North Inlet, an estuarine system in South California consisting of extensive Spartina alterniflora salt marshes and numerous interconnected tidal creeks. The model allows for grid elements to become flooded as the tide rises. We found that tidal water surface slopes and vegetation density in the salt marsh control tidal currents in the creeks. Sheet flow across the marsh at high stages of the tide generates pronounced current assymetry in the creeks. |
