Abstract |
The community structure and seasonal fluctuation of the macrobenthic infauna has been studied in a Ceriops tagal mangrove sediment at Gazi Bay, Kenya. Samples of the upper layer (0-2 cm) were taken using a stack tube of 12.5 cm diameter on a monthly basis. A broad range of abiotic factors was also measured. Eight major taxa were found Oligochaeta, Polychaeta, Nematoda, Amphipoda, Gastropoda, Insecta larvae, Decapoda and Bivalvia. The total density of macrobenthos ranged from 5378 to 60194 ind/m2. The macrobenthic structure in terms of density and genera composition was correlated with abiotic and biotic factors in order to find possible responses. A Spearman rank correlation coefficient-test (with cross correlation), an ANOVA-test and a TUKEY HSD-test was used . Three abiotic seasonalities were indicated : salinity (weather), chlorophyll a and muddy detritus. Most taxa showed a positive density response during the dry seasons, except some Nematoda genera. An increase of muddy detritus and chlorophyll a gave a general decrease in density, which was not excepted for Oligochaeta and Polychaeta (Namalycastis spec.). A strong rain impact could have been the reason for the lack of a clear food impact detection. |
