Abstract |
Innovation is important to remain competitive. As a result also in the port sector innovative concepts are pursued, albeit not always successfully. The present paper examines the conditions for innovation to materialize effectively and successfully. The innovation process is researched by means of case studies by applying four methods, viz. the H- and I-index, the Qualitative Comparative Analysis, a Cost-Benefit Analysis and the Systems of Innovation Approach. The analysis of 75 port-related cases identified the main innovation patterns and reveals the challenges the ports industry faces, as well as factors related to success and failure of port-related innovation, taking into account the context of the respective challenges which prevailed when they emerged. |
