Abstract |
The first results are described of a study on the relation of the vertical distribution of nematodes in sediments, and the biochemical characteristics of these sediments. Samples of two stations along the Belgian coast are discussed. In one of them, there was a clear correlation between oxygen levels and 3 dominant nematode species. It seems that food competition between these species is avoided, by a different tolerance to lower O2-concentrations. At the other station, the food availability is the determining factor for the occurrence of two dominant nematode species. Despite all available ecological data on marine nematodes, their role in sediments still is poorly understood. Studies on feeding behaviour, and experiments with labeled food, can give more insight in the complex trophic strategies of nematodes. There is also need for better methods in quantifying the interactions of nematodes with the lower trophic levels. |
