Abstract |
The historical synonymy, in place since the iconographic work of Bratcher & Cernohorsky, of both Punctoterebra succincta (Gmelin, 1791) and P. textilis (Hinds, 1844) is reassessed, revealing that virtually all current synonyms can in fact be considered separable valid species. Unfortunately, of some cryptic taxa we still lack sufficient comparable material and data and are thus still conservatively treated. Additionally, the in-depth study allowed the discovery and description of five new taxa, and more are under study. Morphological pliability of specific and generic features hampers segregation of species based on shell morphology alone. A new species is here also described in the genus Myurellopsis from the South Indian Ocean which was mistakenly seen as local variant of Myurellopsis undulata and was found mixed in samples of P. succincta. |
