Abstract
500 sea-bed and 500 sea-surface drifters were released in the Irish Sea on each of four occasions. The overall mean return rate of each type of drifter was about 34% within six months of release. Marked differences were found between the movements of sea-surface drifters released on different occasions, whereas there were some similarities in the movements of sea-bed drifters released on different occasions. The movements of the different types of drifters were generally unrelated. The movements of the sea-surface drifters were shown to be closely related to the wind, and the wind factor, k, was estimated to lie between 1.5% and 2.0%. Attention was drawn to the marked vertical shear in residual currents in the Irish Sea indicated by the drifter movements.
