Abstract
The importance of dune scrub for the conservation of insects and spiders is discussed in this contribution. For grasshoppers and ants, dune specific species are absent in scrub, butterflies are mainly present in grassland habitats. Spiders, Dolichopodid flies and Carabid beetles show the same trends, but dune-specific species are fairly present in scrub. Scrubs are especially important as the key habitat for dune specific Empidid flies. For typical grey dune spiders, we demonstrated that scrub litter is important for their juvenile development and as shelter for adults during unsuitable periods. The conservation of scrub vegetation, in mosaic with grassland is thus necessary for an optimal insect- and spider conservation.
