Abstract |
From an historical point of view, the increase in number of Devonian rhynchonellid genera was accomplished in four phases: removal of a blockage and slow start; slight increase; fulgurating acceleration; increased subdivision. Causes for this trend are analysed and inevitably lead to the following question: engulfed in such a spiral, are we getting closer to a more faithful image of reality, or, on the contrary, are we building edifices? The author firmly advocates the first alternative, the merits of which he demonstrates mainly because of the growing stratigraphical precision that well defined genera permit. Moreover, he announces that the saturation point is not yet within sight. |
