Abstract |
On September 19th, 2019 the varunid crab Asthenognathus atlanticus was recorded for the first time in Belgium on the Bligh Bank at a depth of 33 m. A second specimen, a small male was discovered in a sample taken on the 22th of September 2020 on the Thornton Bank at a depth of 30m. Originally described from the Atlantic coast off Morocco in 1933, the species has been discovered northwards in Brittany (1941), Bay of Seine (2012), Bay of Somme (2018) to arrive in Belgian and Dutch waters in 2019. Other species from the family Varunidae that occur offshore the Belgian and Dutch coasts, are the Japanese shore crab Hemigrapsus sanguineus, the brush-clawed shore crab Hemigrapsus takanoi and the Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis, all of these introduced Asian species. |
