| Abstract |
The American piddock Petricolaria pholadiformis originally occurred exclusively along the east coast of North America, but was brought to Europe around 1890 (England) with the transport of the American oyster Crassostrea virginica. The planktonic larvae of the American piddock could then easily be transported towards the rest of Europe by the sea currents. The species was first observed in Belgian waters in Nieuwpoort in 1899. Now, the species lives mainly along our eastern and central coast. This bivalve drills tunnels in peat blocks, wood, hard clay and limestone. Living individuals are often found in washed-up peat blocks. Empty shells often wash up on our beaches. |
