Abstract
The natural distribution area of the Japanese ribbon worm Cephalothrix simula is limited to the northwestern part of the Pacific Ocean. The species was first observed in the Eastern Scheldt (the Netherlands) in 2012, likely introduced via shipping (ballast water), although international shellfish transport cannot be ruled out as a potential vector. This ribbon worm has been observed in Belgium since 2015. The species contains the neurotoxin tetrodotoxin, making further research into its distribution, impact, and the (health) risks associated with its presence necessary.
