Abstract |
Diplosoma listerianum is a tunicate whose area of origin is unknown (i.e. cryptogenic species). The species was introduced by attaching to ship hulls and through the transport of organisms for aquaculture purposes. In Europe, the species occurs widespread in Britain, along the west coast of Europe and the Mediterranean coast. In Belgium, the species has been regularly observed since 2002, on pontoons in the marina of Zeebrugge, and later also in Ostend and on the foundations of offshore wind turbines. The colonies are relatively fragile and have a translucent and gelatinous appearance. Diplosoma listerianum is found from the low-water mark to a depth of about 80 metres. |
