Abstract
There is a high degree of variation in the otoliths of different species in the Ophidiidae and the Gadidae-Macrouridae. However, in these 2 groups there is a series of identical variations in the general form of the otolith contour, modifications of the culcus projection of the sides or the internal surface etc. The existence of this series of analogous variations indicates that the Gadidae and Ophidiidae evolved from the same ancestral group of the paracanthopterygians. On the other hand the otoliths of the Ophidioidei are very different from those of the Blenniidae and Perciformes in general. The oldest known otoliths of the Gadidae and Ophidiidae date from the Upper Cretaceous, by which time the 2 species were already well differentiated.
