Abstract |
Assessing the archaeological significance of areas at sea that are to be affected by industrial and infrastructural works is often time consuming and costly. This is largely due to the ad hoc use of means and methods and the lack of an efficient methodology. Furthermore, at this moment no management system for archaeological heritage in the marine area exists at all in Belgium. This is a dramatic situation especially regarding the ever increasing pressure on the North Sea related to aggregate extraction, wind farms, dredging, infrastructural works, etc. The research project addresses these two shortcomings through: 1. Development of a reliable methodology which allows accurate and cost-effective evaluation of the archaeological potential of marine areas under development (offshore, nearshore, harbours). What (combination of) techniques provide the most relevant information? How can the data be integrated and visualised efficiently? 2. Comprehensive proposals for a transparent and sustainable management policy and for the implementation of a legal framework related to underwater cultural heritage (UCH) in Belgium. This legislative framework should protect the marine historic environment but at the same time also allow the necessary marine exploitation. 3. Practical guidance towards the marine industry, government agencies and public/societal sector with regard to underwater cultural heritage. The project will finally allow for correct implementation of the international conventions and help to safeguard Belgium’s marine historic environment from needless destruction. |
