Abstract
During the ten last years, methods for directly measuring bacterial biomass and the rate of the basic processes involved in bacterial organic matter utilization have been developed. The applications to the North Sea deeply modify our vision of its ecological structure. Based on these new methods, the role of bacteria in carbon cycle is evaluated for the Belgian coastal zone of the North Sea; this clearly demonstrates the importance of the microbial loop in this area. The methods also allow to determine the kinetics and the control factors of the proceses involved in bacterial organic matter utilization, resulting in a general model of bacterioplankton dynamics. The model allows to correctly simulate the peak of bacterial biomass following, with a delay of about one week, the Spring phytoplankton bloom.
